Current Studies at Motherisk: Nicotine Replacement Therapy During Pregnancy

Motherisk is conducting a study about Nicotine Replacement Therapy during pregnancy. Since smoking during pregnancy is still an important issue we want to find the best way to help pregnant smokers quit. We are looking for pregnant women in their second and third trimester, who smoke more than 10 cigarettes per day. The aim of our study is to compare the effectiveness of Nicoderm patches plus counselling, versus counselling alone on smoking cessation in pregnancy. Participation will involve 3 face-to-face consulting meetings with study coordinator at our Motherisk clinic, three non-invasive tests of saliva and urine for products of nicotine, and weekly telephone counselling. One group of study participants will receive the Nicoderm patch free of charge, for whole period of the study (10 weeks). We hope all participants will benefit from this study by becoming more motivated to abstain from smoking in pregnancy and thereafter. Participation in the study is completely voluntary and confidential. If you are interested in participating please contact us toll free at 1-877-327-4636 or e-mail the study coordinator (aleksey.kazmin@sickkids.ca)
